Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

The red-robed youth, who has never touched alcohol since taking human form, demonstrates what it truly means to be a “one-cup knockout.” After giggling foolishly in Yun Zhuoran’s arms for a while, he staggers and collapses right into his embrace.

Yun Zhuoran, still shocked by the words “I want to be brother’s Dao companion,” hasn’t fully recovered, but his body reacts immediately, holding the heart demon’s arm and supporting him easily. He looks at the boy sleeping against him, his clear black eyes reflecting the almost identical face, and his heart fills with shock.

Could it be that he has spoiled the heart demon too much, and now the heart demon actually starts having designs on him?

No wonder the heart demon has been acting so strange recently—unwilling to bathe with him and suddenly paying attention to his appearance. Looking back, these odd behaviors are actually the heart demon being shy in front of his beloved.

Yun Zhuoran doesn’t understand why the heart demon suddenly wants to be his Dao companion. His eyes darken slightly as he looks steadily at the heart demon, who remains completely unaware and still smacks his lips in his sleep.

“Brother, I’m hungry…”

At these words, the frost on Yun Zhuoran’s face melts away, and he laughs dumbly.

That sounds more like the heart demon he knows.

But Yun Zhuoran also listens carefully to the heart demon’s words, hiding the smile in his eyes as he calms down. He feels confused and a little embarrassed—but no rejection.

It’s also nothing like when Shen Lingshu confesses to him—no sense of absurdity or ridicule.

A little heart demon… wanting to be his Dao companion?

Yun Zhuoran can’t help but admire the ambition. “Not lacking in ambition, are you?”

At the same time, he compares in his mind. Compared with others who covet him, the heart demon is the only one he wouldn’t dislike or reject.

Thinking this, Yun Zhuoran’s eyes pause.

Sleeping while standing is uncomfortable, even if he’s leaning on Yun Zhuoran.

Hearing a soft sound, the red-clad boy with flushed cheeks frowns and unconsciously tightens his hands around Yun Zhuoran’s waist.

Yun Zhuoran remains quiet, watching the heart demon. His expression turns a bit cold—because he’s irritated by his own earlier thoughts. Weiran is the heart demon born of his childhood pain. How could he possibly become a Dao companion?

Even with his eyes closed, the heart demon still knows this sleeping position is uncomfortable. Hugging Yun Zhuoran, he mumbles indistinctly, “…Brother, Weiran wants to sleep on the bed!”

The drunken boy’s legs are weak, and he slides down softly like a loach. Yun Zhuoran loses focus for only a second, and the heart demon almost slips from his grasp. Startled, he snaps back to attention and quickly catches the heart demon’s back with one hand. But then his expression shows a trace of disdain—Is this how a Dao companion acts?

Far too lacking… This little heart demon probably doesn’t even understand what a Dao companion is.

Which, honestly, might be true.

Yun Zhuoran frowns slightly, feeling displeased. The heart demon is immature, and maybe it’s just childish talk to want to be his Dao companion, but he actually takes it seriously earlier… Yun Zhuoran glances coldly at him, but in the blink of an eye, his eyes soften again.

If Yun Zhuoran has to have a Dao companion, he would rather choose his own heart demon.

That way, the heart demon can stay with him forever, just as Yun Zhuoran wishes.

Yun Zhuoran knows very well he can’t let the heart demon leave him. Even if one day the heart demon no longer relies on him, Yun Zhuoran won’t let him go.

Since Yun Zhuoran can remember, few people truly matter to him. No matter if it’s Yun Peiran, Gu Shenshu, or Penglai Immortal, no matter how good they are, none compare to the feeling when he’s with the heart demon.

Yun Zhuoran has known this for a long time—because the heart demon is himself.

Of course, he likes himself the most.

But if the heart demon ever lies to him, betrays him, and leaves…

The sleeping heart demon has no idea Yun Zhuoran’s eyes grow extremely cold when looking at him, filled with a vague urge to kill—only because Yun Zhuoran fears the heart demon might learn to be bad and run away someday.

Fortunately, Yun Zhuoran is rational. He doesn’t act on these impulses. Instead, he considers whether he can change the relationship between himself and the heart demon into that of Dao companions.

He doesn’t reject the heart demon’s reality. Even when the heart demon speaks, he’s already moved, because this would naturally keep the heart demon by his side forever, which matches his own wish.

This is a good thing.

But the heart demon is still simple-minded. Even if he sometimes has his own ideas, he’s just a little demon who has recently taken human form.

Yun Zhuoran looks at the slightly immature face of the heart demon and knows there’s no rush for now. Whether to change their relationship or not is better left until the human mind matures.

But no matter what the heart demon chooses in the future, he can’t escape from Yun Zhuoran’s palm.

Yun Zhuoran makes up his mind and walks toward the city with his heart demon expressionless. He hasn’t forgotten this is the gate of Yun City, not the small courtyard where they temporarily live in the southern part of the city.

Though he appears slender, with his current cultivation level, how could he possibly lack the strength to carry a single youth back? He wraps one arm around Xinmo’s and lets him sleep against his shoulder, carrying him with ease.

But just before they reach the gate, a clear and melodious flute tune suddenly drifts down from atop the city wall.

The melody is graceful, with a tinge of melancholy.

Yun Zhuoran has heard this song before. He stops and looks up slightly—under the bright moon, on the city wall stands the cold white-clothed boy in his memory, Yun Shaowei.

Yun Zhuoran’s spiritual senses have been alert to Yun Shaowei’s approach earlier. But when Yun Shaowei tactfully retreats, Yun Zhuoran pretends not to notice. Now, hearing the flute, he knows Yun Shaowei is seeking him for something.

Yun Zhuoran pauses, grabs the heart demon’s arm, and leads him to fly up to the top of the city wall.

Yun Shaowei’s flute sounds a bit melancholy, as if carrying some unspoken sadness. But with a slightly drunk companion, Yun Zhuoran doesn’t want to linger here for too long.

“You didn’t see anything just now.”

As soon as Yun Zhuoran’s slightly cold voice falls, the melodious flute stops.

Yun Shaowei puts down the jade flute, hesitates for a moment, then stiffly turns around, bows his head, and says, “Ninth Uncle, don’t worry. Shaowei just came out to relax, I didn’t see anything, and I didn’t hear anything.”

The moonlight clearly illuminates the white-robed youth’s reddened ears. He doesn’t dare lift his eyes to glance at the two people across from him. His pale face is already tinged with a bright blush. He hadn’t expected to run into Yun Zhuoran and the little island master hiding in the corner… cuddling like that. Though he’s embarrassed, he can’t say he’s surprised.

In the eyes of many, Yun Zhuoran and his heart demon have a very close relationship.

No one outside knows that the young Island Lord is Yun Zhuoran’s heart demon. Rumors claim he’s either Yun Zhuoran’s spirit beast or spirit weapon. In the cultivation world, it isn’t rare for a weapon spirit and its master to become Dao companions.

So no matter what these two are doing hiding here, it’s normal… right?

Yun Shaowei, feeling like he has caught the two flirting under the moonlight, is too embarrassed to raise his head.

Ignoring his burning cheeks, he hurriedly explains, “Please forgive me, Ninth Uncle. When my father heard you left the banquet early, he feared you were displeased with the arrangements and sent me to explain…” Yun Shaowei steps forward with his head lowered, then, as if afraid of being overheard, lowers his voice, “Father said Ninth Uncle should live in Yun City with peace of mind. In three days, Father will find an opportunity to come see you in person. If Ninth Uncle has anything to ask, just ask.”

Yun Zhuoran raises his eyebrows, “In three days?”

When he first arrived in Cloud City, Yun Feng told him that Yun Tianqing only received visitors once every three days. Another three days later, when Yun Zhuoran finally meets him, Yun Tianqing has already sealed off his sea of consciousness.

Now Yun Shaowei is again saying “three days later.” Yun Zhuoran can’t help recalling that banquet Yun Feng arranged for him — a classic trap.

Yun Shaowei seems to think of it too. His face grows even redder with shame, and he bows even lower, chin nearly touching his chest. “Ninth Uncle, don’t worry. Those are my father’s own words. He will meet you, I promise.”

Yun Zhuoran finds the father and son pair increasingly hard to read. Yun Tianqing has only just awakened a few days ago, yet his attitude toward Yun Duo has already changed drastically — utterly incomprehensible. As for Yun Shaowei… he at least seems a little easier to figure out…

Seeing the blush on Yun Shaowei’s face, Yun Zhuoran looks away, confused.

“…Got it.”

Yun Shaowei breathes a sigh of relief — only to see a flash of golden light below. Alarmed, he looks up abruptly—and sure enough, he is now the only one left on the city wall.

The evening breeze passes through the empty streets of Yun City, carrying a faint chill.

In a blink, Yun Zhuoran returns to the small courtyard in the south of the city with the drunken heart demon. He pushes open the door, helps the heart demon to the bed, and lets go. The heart demon falls softly onto the soft bedding.

Fortunately, the heart demon doesn’t have the habit of drooling.

Yun Zhuoran rolls him into the quilt and sits cross-legged beside him. He is used to practicing beside the heart demon, but tonight is different. He looks back at the heart demon curled under the quilt, showing only a rosy, handsome face, cheeks still soft with baby fat.

Yun Zhuoran reaches out, pinches his cheek, and takes out the rabbit wood carving the heart demon gave him from his sleeve. Looking at the round, cute little rabbit, he smiles gently, the light in his eyes tender.

That night, the heart demon sleeps soundly, but Yun Zhuoran cannot enter a meditative state.

When the heart demon wakes, he opens his eyes and sees Yun Zhuoran sitting on the bed with his back turned. He sniffs and hugs the corner of the quilt, aggrieved.

“Brother, I have a headache.”

Yun Zhuoran glances at him and hands over a delicate jade bottle. “Of course your head hurts.”

The heart demon blinks, staring at the jade bottle in Yun Zhuoran’s hand. For a moment, he doesn’t know whether it’s the white jade bottle that makes Yun Zhuoran’s skin flawless or Yun Zhuoran’s slender fingers that make the bottle more eye-catching.

He frowns again and cries in pain, “Why do I have a headache, brother? What is this?”

Yun Zhuoran hesitates, not saying this is the aftereffect of drinking wine last night. Waking up with a hangover would be uncomfortable. He puts the bottle in the heart demon’s hand and says flatly, “The pain will go away after taking the medicine. Don’t drink again. Otherwise, who knows if you’ll get drunk and kidnapped.” Yun Zhuoran looks at him meaningfully, then stands up with the wood carving in hand. “There’s hot water in the room. Remember to wash after taking the medicine.”

The heart demon, sensitive as always, notices Yun Zhuoran is a little colder, not as gentle as before. Maybe it’s because he stole his brother’s wine last night, or Yun Zhuoran is still angry about what happened at the banquet.

Just as Yun Zhuoran turns to leave, the heart demon catches a glimpse of the rabbit carving in his hand — his eyesight is excellent. He suddenly jolts upright, all signs of pain or weakness gone as he springs out of the blankets.

“Brother! What’s in your hand?”

Yun Zhuoran asks knowingly, “What?”

The heart demon’s eyes widen, pointing at the wood carving in horror. “This!”

A smile flashes in Yun Zhuoran’s eyes. “You gave it to me and forgot after you got drunk?”

The heart demon is surprised.

Seeing him dumbfounded, Yun Zhuoran’s eyes gleam with mischief as he hands the wood carving over. “Weiran, you really forgot you gave it to me after you got drunk. Are you going to regret it when you wake up?”

The heart demon says in a daze, “I was drunk?”

“You still smell of alcohol.”

Hearing this, the heart demon grabs Yun Zhuoran’s sleeve and sniffs it. Because he trusts Yun Zhuoran so much, he can smell alcohol even when there isn’t any. Thinking about how his brother stayed with him all night, no wonder he had been so cold just now—he must have been disgusted by his stench.

The heart demon blushes and quickly shrinks back. “Brother, I’ll take a shower now!”

But the rabbit wood carving is right next to him.

The heart demon hesitates for a moment, then reaches out. “Brother, I didn’t mean to ruin Brother Peiran’s wood carving. I just saw he hadn’t finished carving…”

Just as the heart demon’s fingertips are about to touch the wood carving, Yun Zhuoran suddenly pulls his hand back.

The heart demon is stunned again.

Yun Zhuoran holds up the wooden rabbit. “What was given to me is mine. No one is allowed to take my things. Do you want to take it back?”

For some reason, the heart demon sees seriousness in Yun Zhuoran’s calm face. He can’t figure it out, so he admits his mistake directly, “I understand. What was given to brother is brother’s. I’ve given it to brother. It’s yours.”

Yun Zhuoran wants to take the opportunity to teach him some truths, but seeing the heart demon bow his head so quickly, he frowns, says no more, and turns away.

The heart demon sighs in annoyance, thinking maybe he’s too smelly and has driven his brother away.

At that moment, Yun Zhuoran pauses, walks back, and smiles slightly. “Weiran said before he would help me find a Dao companion. Three days later, Yun Tianqing will come see me. Then we’ll ask about Yun Peiran, and leave Yun City—maybe return to Penglai, or go somewhere else to keep searching. Weiran, have you ever thought about what kind of Dao companion to find for me?”

The heart demon is shaken by Yun Zhuoran’s extremely rare gentle smile at first and thinks his brother must have calmed down. But when he hears the latter part, his mood suddenly darkens, and his face turns gloomy.

“If brother doesn’t want one, I won’t look.”

Yun Zhuoran’s eyes flash. “Then… has Weiran ever thought about finding a Dao companion for yourself?”

The heart demon looks at Yun Zhuoran warily. Why does his brother mention finding a Dao companion all of a sudden? Could it be that after seeing Shen Lingshu last night — during that brief moment while he was drunk — Gege got tricked, just like in those storybooks?

Suspicious and alarmed, the heart demon shakes his head without thinking. “Can you please not find a Dao companion?” The heart demon pleads with Yun Zhuoran, “Brother doesn’t want a Dao companion, Weiran won’t either.”

Yun Zhuoran originally wanted to test the heart demon’s thoughts. Hearing this, he is stunned at first, unsure whether to feel satisfied or dissatisfied. Weiran just said last night he wanted to be his Dao companion—but today he’s denying it?

“Does Weiran really not want it?”

The heart demon looks at him eagerly. “What’s the use of a Dao companion? Having brother is enough.”

Yun Zhuoran remains silent, deep in thought. From the corner of his eye, he notices the heart demon’s fingers — so tense they are digging into the bedding.

If not for those restless, twitching claws giving away the anxiety he’s trying to hide, Yun Zhuoran might’ve almost believed him.

Looking at the heart demon’s sweet, sincere smile, he grows even more puzzled. He heard clearly last night — there was no mistake.

So what now? Is the heart demon regretting it? Or is he just too afraid to admit he wants to be Yun Zhuoran’s Dao companion?
